“Ilaw sa Dilim" - Dokumentaryo ni Howie Severino

Portion of Monday's episode aired on News to Go The condition of children is a window into how compassionate our society is. For the past four years, Howie Severino and his documentary team have been documenting a group of children as a way of tracking how our society is evolving. But these are blind kids, among the most disadvantaged. Howie and his team learn that three of the blind children they first met in 2007 are now in regular public schools where they are doing well, and able to read and write. One of them, Aleeia Maclit, is ranked number one in her class despite being the only blind pupil. But there are many more blind children in the country who are not in school or who have not enjoyed the benefits of living near special education services. Among them is Jessica, a 12 year old who lives in a small rural hamlet in Pangasinan whose dark days are often pierced by the pain in her exquisite singing voice. She has never been to school and has never been reached by services for the blind. Howie and his team document Jessica's daily life in her isolated village, before they accompany her to the outside world where she will go to school for the first time. I-Witness presents “Ilaw sa Dilim" on Monday, September 26, after Saksi.
