'Ka Freddie'


Episode airs on Mar. 12, 2007 Reporter: Jay Taruc This Monday, catch Jay Taruc’s installment of this year’s I-Witness anniversary series on Philippine icons as music legend Ka Freddie Aguilar tells his life story. It was in 1978 he says when he first gained notice at the Metropop Festival. His folk composition "Anak" was a crowd favorite but it lost to another song. Still, "Anak" gained an immediate cult following and has since been translated into more than 40 languages. Ka Freddie explains how he wrote “Anak" and other very popular songs such as “Magdalena" and “Estudyante Blues". He relates his life as a rebellious son, as a struggling artist, as a singer amidst political crisis, and now as a father to five children also into music. The documentary also gives us an intimate look into Ka Freddie’s life through the eyes of his friends, fellow music artists Mike Hanopol, Lolita Carbon and Heber Bartolome. His children make a special appearance as well: sons Jericho and Jonan plays “Estudyante Blues" with Ka Freddie while daughter Maegan sings “Anak".
