Seven months after the strongest typhoon in recorded history hit Eastern Visayas, many of the survivors are still battling a raging storm.

Arlene, 32 years old, lost 3 of her young children to typhoon Yolanda. She also lost her mother, her siblings, and her nieces and nephews. In an instant, she lost 9 members of her family. Only she, her father and one of her children remain. She says she hears her dead relatives calling her when she visits their graves. When asked what runs through her head every time she thinks of them, she breaks down and confesses “I want to dig up their graves because I wasn’t able to see them before they were buried”. Her father and only surviving son, have also been spending a lot of time staring blankly inside the shanty they now call home.

The super typhoon has torn down the sturdiest buildings, its waters sweeping away everything in its path. Yolanda has broken even the strongest among us.

Much has been said about the resilience of the Filipino people, but the reality is, many are struggling to move on, barely able to keep their heads above water. The trauma has left many in a state of depression, and some even worse. Doctors believe that the mental health issues are the long-term problems Yolanda has left behind. There are no major psychiatric facilities available, and medical personnel make do with issuing medicines to walk-in patients.
