For more than a decade now, Tatay Venancio has been living in a watery neighbourhood. Stagnant waters from previous floods and high tides fill their whole yard.
A few decades back, their situation was very different: lush countryside has been their landscape. Ever since Mount Pinatubo erupted, however, life started to change. Rice fields have become fishponds.
For Olive, a teacher in Calumpit, Bulacan, noise from the engines of tricycles heard outside their house have been replaced by the sound of oars and motorboats. Small boats have become the essential transportation of several residents of Calumpit. This situation is very uncomfortable especially for families with children.
While some residents left this watery nightmare, some accepted their fate. They have no choice but to adapt to their situation.
Residents of some communities in Bulacan and Pampanga have been living in submerged communities. Houses on stilts started to appear. The concrete roads were replaced by wooden bridges while their rice fields have now become a vast waterland.
More than a decade ago, experts have started to analyze land areas that are sinking. Up to this day, unfortunately, they are continuously sinking.
In fact, one study stated that a significant portion of the Philippines will sink in this century, including parts of Metro Manila. If this happens, are we prepared?
