Colorful, fun & festive… this is the image of Binondo as they celebrate Chinese New Year. As local and foreign tourists flock to Binondo to experience the food, buy cheap lucky charms and join in the festivities, one will never guess that it took the Tsinoys or the Filipino-Chinese hundreds of years to be accepted and their traditions, embraced.

 

Decked in red lanterns and streets brimming with goods to be sold, Binondo has been known to be the go-to place for cheap retail.  It owes its reputation to the fact that even before the Spanish colonizers arrived in the Philippines, the Chinese have long been trading with the early Filipinos. But for the early Chinese settlers, many of whom are poor and illiterate, life under the Spanish rule was not easy. Persecution, harassment and massacres—these are the little known stories of the Chinese people's long struggle for acceptance. 

 

By the turn of the century, Chinese mestizos have emerged.  Rich and educated abroad, they became the movers of the revolution against the Spanish colonizers. The likes of Jose Rizal and Juan Luna have Chinese ancestry. A pure-blooded Chinese, Jose Ignacio Paua joined Emilio Aguinaldo’s army. He built and repaired weapons for the revolutionaries and became brigadier general.

 

Today, Binondo remains to be a hub of trade, and many wealthy businessmen can trace their ancestry to one of the oldest Chinatowns in the world. Dr. James Dy, owner of Chinese General Hospital, Pan Pacific Hotel, Universal Records and Dyna Drug will never forget the Binondo he grew up in and the valuable lessons he has learned that made him the successful businessman that he is today.

 

The Tsinoys of Binondo have come a long way. The dark and turbulent past of the early Chinese immigrants have forced them to adapt, turning into gold a miserable situation. This Saturday on I-Witness, Sandra Aguinaldo takes a trip down memory lane in “Made in Chinatown” , on GMA-7. after Celebrity Bluff.

 

Filipino Version:

 

Makulay at masaya ang imahe ng Binondo tuwing idinaraos ang Chinese New Year.  Nagdadagsaan ang mga turista para matikman ang pagkain, mamili ng mga murang bagay na pampasuwerte at makisaya sa selebrasyon.  Kung titingan, hindi mo iisipin na daan-daang taon ang inabot bago matanggap ang mga tradisyon ng mga Tsinoy o Filipino-Chinese dito sa Pilipinas.

 

Balot ng mga kulay pulang palamuti at nag-uumapaw sa samu’t-saring paninda, kilala ang Binondo bilang sentro ng mga murang bilihin. Bago pa man dumating ang mga Kastila sa Pilipinas, nangagalakal na ang mga Tsino dito sa bansa. Naghihikahos at walang pinag-aralan, dumaan sila sa matinding paghihirap sa ilalim ng mga Kastilang mananakop. Itinaboy at ipinagpapatay—ilan lang ito sa mga tagong kuwento ng mahabang kasaysayan ng pakikibaka ng mga Tsino para matanggap sa Pilipinas.

 

Pagdating ng bagong siglo, nagkaroon na ng mga Chinese-mestizo.  Mayaman at nakapag-aral sa labas ng bansa, ilan sa kanila, nagpasimuno sa pag aklas laban sa mga Kastilang mananakop.  Sina Jose Rizal at Juan Luna ay may mga dugong Tsino.  Si Jose Ignacio Paua, purong Tsino, ay kasapi ni Emilio Aguinaldo.  Gumagawa siya ng mga sandata para sa mga robolusiyonaryo at naging isang heneral.

 

Ngayon, patuloy ang Binondo bilang sentro ng retail trade sa bansa at marami sa mga mayayamang negosyante ang nagsimula rito.  Si Dr. James Dy, may ari ng Chinese General Hospital, Pan Pacific Hotel, Universal Records at Dyna Drug ay lumaki sa Binondo.  Hindi-hindi raw niya malilimutan ang mga karanasan sa paglaki sa Binondo at ang mga mahahalagang  aral na itinuro sa kanya nito na naging susi sa kanyang tagumpay. 
 

Malayo na nga ang narating ng mga Tsinoy ng Binondo.  Ang madilim at masalimuot nitong nakaraan ang humubog sa kanila para gawing ginto ang isang kalunos-lunos na sitwasyon. Ngayong Sabado sa I-Witness, magbabalik-tanaw si Sandra Aguinaldo sa “Made in Chinatown,” sa GMA-7, pagkatapos ng Celebrity Bluff.
