It seems that President Rodrigo Dutere’s war on drugs has taken its toll on our jail facilities. Even before assuming office, many pushers and drug addicts have surrendered to the authorities. But they were sent home with a promise of rehabilitation.
But those who are caught are directly sent to jail.
Quezon City Jail is one of those that bear the brunt of this campaign because not less than ten suspects are being committed per day.
According to the BJMP authorities, the numbers have dramatically jumped to more than 6% increase in the total population of detainees in QC Jail alone.
Its population has started to balloon when Oplan Lambat Sibat, a campaign against drugs, was implemented.
More than half of the QC Jail population are detained because of drug cases.Though congestion is nothing new, according to the officials, the inhumane conditions of the detainees leave a lot to be desired.
Even the stairs and narrow hallways have been used as sleeping quarters.
Mart is a newly committed detainee who was reported to the police by his friend as a drug user. According to Mart, he has to endure the sudden change in his lifestyle to be able to hold on to his sanity.
Join Jay Taruc this Saturday as he documents the living conditions in one of the most populated jails in NCR. I-Witness airs after Lip Sync Battle Philippines.
