HALA-MEN

ENGLISH VERSION

Gardening is no longer just your mother’s or grandmother’s hobby.

In the pandemic age, men have taken to ornamental plants by storm, filling Instagram and other online spaces with photos posing with their favorite Philodendrons.

They’re not only “lolos” but young bearded men, some proudly flexing bare-chested next to their Alocasias and giant ferns.

With many stuck at home with time on their hands, people of all genders are discovering the joys and therapeutic benefits of plants. Plantitos, or hala-men, have been among the most avid enthusiasts, demolishing old stereotypes.

Counting himself among the legion of recent converts to gardening, Howie Severino sets out to meet other hala-men. He learns about plant propagation, the boom in online selling, the plant capital of Silang, Cavite, and the issue of poaching rare plants from the wild.

Howie’s team accompanies two hala-men on a visit to an exquisite secret garden in Antipolo, which is reserved only for plants native to the Philippines.

“I-Witness: Hala-men” airs this Saturday, December 11, 2021, 10:30pm on GMA. #
