The year was 1997. In a boxing gym in Manila, Swedish photographer Gerhard Joren was busy taking photos of a young boxer in training. The puny teenager from General Santos City was not his original subject – but since he saw that the lad was persistent, he thought a few shots would not hurt.
18 years later, the teenager in Gerhard’s photographs have risen to be one of the greatest boxers of all time with titles in eight divisions, a career in public service, and millions of supporters to boot. He was no longer the patpatin amateur boxer, he is now the one and only Pacman!
Gerhard could not believe the happy accident – Manny was not his assignment, but he turned out to be one of the greats. And now, he has these photographs to prove that he saw the Fighting Pride of the Philippines before he came to be.
He would later be known as the Pambansang Kamao, The Mexicutioner, The Fighter of the Decade among others – but tattooed on his chest is a simple boxing glove. It is a reminder that no matter what they call him, he will always be Manny Pacquiao – a simple boy from Mindanao who dreamed that maybe, just maybe, his passion could make a difference for his country.
