Stonefish, inventors, child gamblers, and global warming

Episode on August 18, 2007 Saturday, 8:30 p.m. Stone fish, etc The Philippines is considered as a world “center of marine biodiversity" and the Central Visayas, the “center of the center of marine biodiversity" because of our rich stock of unique fishes. One of these is the stonefish, a poisonous fish described as something that looks like a demon from hell but tastes like heaven. Apart from the stonefish, residents in the Visayas have sighted different types of unique-lookng fishes. Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho tries to find out why these fishes have suddenly started appearing. The next big thing: Pinoy inventions Filipinos have repeatedly proven their ability in different fields. Creative imagination has led some Filipinos to bring about such inventions as the fluorescent lamp, karaoke, and incubator. Filipino inventors today have come up with such things as beer with vitamins, a refrigerator with a clothes dryer, a reusable coffin, an umbrella with a lamp, and a portable filter that can make even water from the Marikina River fit for drinking. Which invention will find commercial success? Child gambler If children once cared for cats and dogs, these days some of them have turned to chickens and doves – not as pets but as tools for gambling. Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho finds that the school work and even attitudes of some of these child gamblers have turned for the worse. Global Warming Former US Vice President Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth" jolted the world. It depicted global warming spawning natural disasters such as powerful hurricanes and severe flooding. The recent dry spell in the country has led some to blame global warming and the same goes for the heavy rains that followed. There are those who fear that by 2040, 64 of the Philippines' 81 provinces would be affected by the rise in water levels; they say this could include Navotas City in Metro Manila and the resort island of Boracay. Napakarami raw kasi ng mga di-pangkaraniwang isda na matatagpuan dito. Isa na rito ang “stonefish" – ang isdang nakakalason at higit sa lahat…mukha raw demonyong galing sa impyerno! Pero ang lasa naman daw nito, “heaven na heaven"! Maliban sa stone fish, sunud-sunod na ring namamataan ng ilang mga residente sa kabisayaan ang iba pang mga kakatwang isda. Dahil sa kahirapan ng buhay ngayon, sumasabak na rin daw ang mga paslit sa pakikipagsugal. Kilalanin ang mga batang hayop sa pustahan at kung paanong hindi nila namamalayan na…unti-unti na pala nitong naaapektuhan ang kanilang pag-aaral at maging kaugalian! Global Warming Nagimbal ang buong mundo sa ginawang dokumentaryo ni Al Gore na “An Inconvenient Truth". Dito ipinakitang ang mga “natural disasters" sa iba’t-ibang panig ng mundo tulad ng malalakas na bagyo at pagbaha ay dulot ng global warming – ang sobrang pag-init ng mundo na nagdudulot din ng pagkatunaw ng yelo. Ang sanhi naman ng pagkainit ng mundo ang sobrang polusyon at iba pang porma ng pagkawasak sa kalikasan. Maging ang Pilipinas, hindi nakaligtas sa poot ng global warming. Matapos ang dry spell, sobrang pag-ulan naman ang dinadanas ngayon sa iba’t-ibang panig ng Pilipinas. Pinangangambahan din na pagdating ng taong 2040 – 64 sa 81 na probinsya ang maapektuhan ng pagtaas ng tubig. Kasama na rito ang Navotas City at pati na rin daw ang isla ng Boracay?
