Biyaheng Ilocandia sa Motorcycle Diaries

Ngayong Biyernes, angkas na sa biyahe ni Jay Taruc patungong norte upang muling tuklasin ang mayamang kasaysayan, kalikasan at kultura ng Ilocos.

 

Maliban sa mga sikat na dalampasigan ng Pagudpud at nagtatayugang windmills ng Bangui, hitik rin ang Ilocandia sa mga makasaysayang lugar na naging saksi sa mahigit isang siglo nating nakaraan. Ang Cape Bojeador lighthouse ay minsang nagsilbing tanglaw para sa mga galleon na nangangalakal ng tabako. Ang lumang simbahan naman ng Paoay ay nagsilbing kuta ng mga Katipunero noong panahon ng Kastila.

 

Ang impluwensiya ng mga Marcos sa Ilocos Norte ay nananatili pa ring matatag magpahanggang ngayon. Maliban sa Marcos Museum, dadaanan din ni Jay ang Fort Ilocandia: ang hotel na ipinatayo pa ng dating Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos para sa isang importanteng okasyon ng kanyang pamilya. At sa bayan naman ng Paoay, matatagpuan ang Malacanang of the North na nagsilbing opisina ni Pangulong Marcos sa gitna ng kanyang termino.

REDISCOVERING ILOCANDIA

This Friday, Jay Taruc will ride up north to visit and rediscover the natural wonders, the rich history and cultural heritage of Ilocos many of us may still not know of.

 

Aside from the pristine beaches of Pagudpud and the towering windmills of Bangui, Ilocandia is home to several historical sites dating back to the Spanish era. Each of these sites has their own stories to tell as they became witness to key events in our own history. The century-old Cape Bojeador lighthouse served as the guiding light to galleons that once exported tobacco during the 1800s. The Old St. Augustine Church in Paoay once served as observation post to the Katipuneros.

 

The imprints of the Marcoses have also left an indelible mark in the province. Aside from the famous Marcos Museum, Fort Ilocandia, now a first class hotel serving foreign and local tourists, was built by the former president for an important family occasion. And the Malacanang of the North, situated in the town of Paoay, served as Macoy's main office during his term as president.
