She’s the daughter of two of the Philippines’ most famous celebrities; he grew up helping his mother sell fruits for a living. They’re two people from completely different social backgrounds, but somehow, Danica Sotto and Marc Pingris found their way to each other and eventually became the perfect couple.
“Powerhouse” host Kara David described the two: “Kayong dalawa, different pero match!”
They say people meet because of destiny. But for Marc and Danica, hard work and faith played a bigger role in their love story.
“Naniniwala talaga ako na kami talaga ‘yung itinakda ni God para sa isa’t isa,” said Danica in their interview.
Marc Pingris’ humble beginnings
Marc grew up in Pangasinan. As a kid, he never heard from his French father. Because of this, life became hard for young Marc. He watched his mother take the role of both father and mother in order to earn money for the family.
“Tinutulungan ko ‘yung mother ko na magtinda ng fruits sa palengke, mga 10 o 11 years old ako no’n,” he said. “Actually doon na rin kami sa ilalim ng puwesto namin natutulog, eh.”
But no matter how hard life was for Marc, it didn’t stop him from playing the sport he loved – basketball. “Nanghihiram pa nga ako ng sapatos before. Tapos ‘yung size ng paa ko dati, size 10, ‘yung nahihiram ko mga 8 lang,” he said.
Because of his dedication to learn and play basketball, he was soon discovered and offered the chance to be a practice player for the PBA in Manila. At the time, he was rubbing elbows with his idol Rommel Adducul and other PBA personalities, but this didn’t immediately change Marc’s living situation.
He was given a small allowance of P100 daily for food and other expenses. “Kumakain lang ako ng barbecue tapos instant noodles at bagoong. Six months na ganoon,” he said.

When Marc was finally drafted and got recognized as a PBA player, life gradually became easier for him. “Siguro nagbunga rin kung gaano ako nagsumikap noon,” he said.
A typical basketball player, Marc frequented the gym and became friends with the trainers there. Little did he know that being friends with his trainer would become his way of meeting the love of his life – actress Danica Sotto.
“‘Yung trainer niya, friend ko rin so pinakilala kaming dalawa,” Danica recalled.
Soon enough, Marc saw himself courting the daughter of Vic Sotto and Dina Bonnevie. It was intimidating at first, but Marc dealt with it well. “Hindi naman takot, nahihiya lang,” he said. “Wala naman kasi akong balak na masama kay Danica, eh. Totoong tao naman ako na humarap sa kanila so hindi ako natakot.”
Learning from each other
Coming from two seemingly different worlds, Marc and Danica had a lot of experiences to share with each other.
Marc taught Danica to value and be contented with the simple things. “Nung time na we were about to close my restaurant, umiyak ako nang sobra, tapos hindi man lang ako kino-console ni Marc,” she said. “Sabi niya sa akin, ‘hindi mo pa nararanasan kung ano talaga ‘yung hirap,’ tsaka niya kinuwento ‘yung mga paghihirap niya dati.”
“I was taken aback, and na-humble ako,” said Danica. “Sabi ko sa sarili ko, because of his life, natuto akong i-appreciate kung ano ang meron ako.”
On the other hand, Danica taught Marc how to spend money wisely. “Hindi ko kasi naranasan na may daddy, so parang na-spoil ko na yata ‘yung anak namin,” he said, talking about their 5-year-old son Mic. “So sabi niya sa akin, ‘alam kong hindi ka nagkaroon ng ganyan, pero sana ipagamit mo muna nang maayos bago bumili ulit.’”
Danica said she wanted their kids to grow up valuing what they have and worked for. “Naranasan ko kasi ‘yun, eh. Parang I had so much, so hindi ko na-value,” she said.
Perfectly imperfect marriage
Marc and Danica have been married for seven years. The years together have made their love stronger, but they admit that the marriage goes through tough times as well. “Hindi naman kami perfect ni Danica, nandoon pa rin ‘yung away, tampuhan, or selosan,” said Marc.
So what’s the secret to keeping the fire burning?
“Bago kami matulog, pinagpe-pray namin ‘yung marriage life namin,” Marc said. “Kapag naman magkaaway kami, hindi kami natutulog hangga’t hindi nagbabati, kahit madaling araw pa ‘yan.”
“Hindi kami nagbabati para lang matapos na. Kung sino man ‘yung may kasalanan, she or he has to explain why she or he did that and apologize,” she said. “Then kapag okay na, wala nang sumbatan in the future.” — Isabelle Laureta/CM, GMA News
