Taiwanese PC maker launches its first subnotebook
MANILA, Philippines - A Taiwanese computer maker launched its own solid-state drive (SSD)-based laptop in the Philippines, in a bid to compete in the subnotebook niche, considered as the fastest growing segment in Asia. With its Aspire One mobile computer, Acer joined the ranks of computer companies which have launched SSD-based notebooks in the Philippines. To be available locally in one to two weeks, the computer has a screen size of 8.9 inches, weighs less than a kilo, and sports similar features found in bigger notebooks. Priced at P18,800, the Linux-based model is considered competitive enough with its local rivals. A Windows version, which will carry XP Home edition operating system, will soon follow, executives said. Besides being the first sub-laptop to carry Intelâs new Atom processor (1.6GHz, 533MHz FSB, 512MB L2 cache), the new model is targeted at professionals and students, as well as first-time users and those who seek a second laptop. The unit has 8GB storage, with expansion capability using an extension SD card, or up to 80 GB hard drive. The Aspire One will be initially available in âseashell white" color, although blue and brown will follow soon. During the same event, Acer launched Aspire Gemstone Blue 6920, the worldâs first notebook computer equipped with Blu-Ray ROM player and Dolby Home Theater System. Another new product, the Aspire Predator G7700, was also launched by Acer to target the higher-end gaming PC market, a niche area that is different from the usual target of traditional gaming PC manufacturers. Similarly equipped with Blu-ray technology, the Aspire Predator G7700 is well suited for the graphics-intensive requirements demanded by computer games. - GMANews.TV
