Report: Apple to release only 'upgraded' iPhone 4 this week?

Will Apple Inc. only be releasing an updated iPhone 4 instead of the much-hyped iPhone 5 at its media event this week? Tech site Gizmodo has reported coming across a cheaper version of the iPhone 4 in Brazil, where there is a factory of Apple supplier Foxconn. Gizmodo said its Brazilian staff gained access to photos of the new iPhone, to be announced this week, in the Foxconn factory there, and found a new-SKU iPhone “that looks just like the old iPhone 4." “(W)hen you get to the last (photo), a picture of a Foxconn Brazil quality control form, you’ll notice something strange: a different model number, N90A. This has already been rumored to represent a cheaper version of the iPhone4," it said. But the Gizmodo report said the phones in the photo it got are not likely to be sold as they did not meet Apple’s manufacturing standards. It quoted its Brazil editor-in-chief Pedro Burgos as saying the lenses in the phones’ cameras may have been stained. Meanwhile, Apple enthusiast site 9to5mac.com reported Apple’s iTunes has leaked an iPhone 4S with an iPhone 4 design. The 9to5mac.com report said the iPhone 4S will have dual-mode capability. “Inside the latest iTunes beta is a specific mention of the ‘iPhone 4S.’ Along with the new iPhone name of ‘iPhone 4S’ comes an image, and it is of a CDMA iPhone 4," it said. The report noted iTunes only holds two iPhone 4S references: black and white versus the four iPhone 4 references of black/GSM, black/CDMA, white/GSM, and white/CDMA. “This may also confirm the rumors of the new iPhone being a dual-mode/CDMA + GSM handset," it said. It added the new iPhone will likely feature the dual-core A5 processor from the iPad 2, and eight megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM, Nuance-based speech-to-text Dictation, and the breakthrough Assistant feature based on Apple’s purchase of Siri. — RSJ, GMA News
