Magnitude-5.1 earthquake jolts Hernani, Eastern Samar —Phivolcs
A magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck Hernani town in Eastern Samar on Sunday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tectonic earthquake occurred at 02:24 p.m. and its epicenter was located 42 kilometers northeast of Hernani. Its depth was seven kilometers.
The quake was felt at Intensity IV in the towns of Hernani, Salcedo, and Gen. Macarthur in Eastern Samar.
It was at Intensity III in Tacloban City, and the towns of Babatngon and Barugo in Leyte; as well as in Borongan City, towns of San Julian, Quinapondan, Maydolong, and Dolores in Eastern Samar.
Intensity II was reported in Palo, Leyte.
Phivolcs said that damage from the earthquake was unlikely, and, as of 6:10 p.m., aftershocks were no longer expected.
No casualties had been reported as of posting time.
Dandy Camero from the Phivolcs' Seismology Division explained on Super Radyo dzBB that the movement in the Philippine Trench could have caused the earthquake. —Dona Magsino/LBG, GMA News
