MMDA acquires 'earthquake house' simulator

To make sure its rescue teams —and the general public— will be better prepared for earthquakes, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has acquired its own earthquake simulator.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the hydraulically-powered simulator, dubbed "Shake, Rattle, and Learn House," can simulate the effects of quakes of magnitude 4 to 8.

"Earthquake simulation also teaches safe personal behavior and practice in case of an earthquake. This is a learning tool against the perils of earthquakes by providing a scenario to practice protective procedures," Tolentino said.

He added people will have to experience the feeling of being in a quake "to better understand earthquake and be prepared for it."

With the facility, he said the MMDA hopes to "help raise the public's awareness and knowledge about the earthquake phenomenon."

The MMDA said the simulator, which can seat up to 10 people, is similar to the one used by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Tolentino added the facility may be used by visiting students and schoolchildren during educational tours at the MMDA and local government units. — TJD, GMA News
