Over 200 Pinoy math wizards to represent country in intl tilts

At least 248 Philippine elementary and high school math wizards have been selected to represent the country in international math competitions this year.

The Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG) said the 248 were among 2,824 students who underwent the 2013 Young Mathematicians' In-house Intensive Training Program (YMIITP).

"We taught them higher and advanced math subjects and techniques," said MTG president Dr. Simon Chua.

Aside from the 248, who include 131 from the elementary and 117 from high school levels, the MTG also selected 425 alternates.

Chua said the Philippines will take part in at least 12 math contests this year in Bulgaria, Turkey, Singapore, Hong Kong and China.

Last year, Filipino math wizards won about 570 medals and awards in different international math contests.

The MTG has been training Filipino students for participation in international math contests since 1995.

Following the selection, the representatives and their alternates will have further training under MTG's  Mathematical Olympiad Summer Training Program (MOSTP).

MOSTP will be held six days a week from April 10 to May 15.

"We will be honing their math skills in preparation for math competitions abroad," said Chua.
