The recent rumblings of Mount Mayon in Bicol have brought volcanic eruptions to the fore of public consciousness once again—especially in the province of Albay, which is currently under a state of calamity after Alert Level 3 was raised in the area surrounding Mayon.
GMA News to Go shares some tips from the US Geological Survey on what to do before and during ashfall, should Mayon erupt:
Before ashfall:
- Prepare dust masks to cover your face with. Wet hankies can be used as a substitute.
- Prepare food and water supply that can last for 3 days.
- Prepare a first aid kit and medicine.
- Prepare battery-operated radios and flashlights.
- Prepare extra blankets and clothes.
- Make sure to cover drain pipes to prevent them from being clogged with ash.
- Wrap all electronic devices and gadgets with plastic to protect them from the ash.
- Prepare emergency money in case ATMs become inaccessible.
During ashfall:
- stay indoors if possible
- keep all doors and windows locked
- keep updated by listening to the news on the radio
