Pinoy kids bag 27 math, science medals in int'l olympiad


Grade school students from the Philippines again shone on the international stage, earning 27 awards in the recently concluded 11th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for Primary Schools in Indonesia.
 
The Philippine team won one gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals, and Best in Experiment in the Olympiad, said Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines president Dr. Simon Chua, president of the (MTG).
 
This year’s IMSO attracted 226 contestants from 14 countries including China, South Africa, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Brunei, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal and host Indonesia.
 
Winning the gold medal in Math was Steven Reyes, 11, of St. Jude Catholic School.
 
Silver medalists in Math included:
 
  • Patricia Faith Capito of UP Integrated School
  • Naomi Anne King of St. Jude Catholic School
  • Immanuel Josiah Balete of St. Stephen’s High School
  • Dominic Lawrence Bermudez of Notre Dame of Greater Manila
  • Vanessa Ryanne Julio of St. Jude Catholic School.
 
Silver medalists in Science included:
 
  • Albriz Moore Bagsic of Lilyrose School
  • Hugh Angelo Sonon of SPED Olongapo
  • Ralde Anuel Bautista of MGC New Life Christian Academy
  • Lyle Wynzel Tamayo of Mother Goose Special School System
  • Laila Denise Dy of St. Jude Catholic School
  • Frederick Ivan Michael Tan of Xavier School.
 
Bronze medalists included:
 
  • Al Patrick Castro of Pasig Catholic College
  • Shawn Darren Chua of MGC New Life Christian Academy
  • Trisha Danielle Sia of Chiang Kai Shek College
  • Robert Frederick Uy of St. John’s Institute
  • Jan Cedrick Quintin of Mother Goose Special Science School
  • Angelo Vince Perez of De La Salle-Lipa
  • Justin Teng Soon Khoo of Learning Circle Academy
  • Allyana Coleen Reyes of Falcon School.
 
Bronze medalists in Science include:
 
  • Maria Monica Manlises of St. Stephen’s High School
  • Marco Erano Dumale of De La Salle University Science and Technology Complex
  • Justin Tan of St. John’s Institute
  • Sophia Marion Medina of Colegio San Agustin-Binan
  • Ryan Christopher Deodores of Colegio San Agustin-Binan.
 
In Science, Jessica Loraine Gan of St. Jude Catholic School won Best in Experiment and also bagged a silver medal.
 
The students were accompanied to the contest by Chua and team leaders and trainers Rechilda Villame, Dr. Eduardo Dela Cruz, Arvie Ubarro, Ezra Templonuevo, Ella Villame and Rogelio Dizon. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
