WATCH: Multiple parallel universes? Comic books may be right after all

Multiple or parallel universes are a pretty common plot point in comic books—right now, Marvel’s going through their Secret Wars event which shows multiple universes merging with one another to form Battleword. But what are the chances of a parallel universe actually existing?

Marvel interviewed Michael Shara, curator of the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History, who said that they’re “unquestionably possible,” before elaborating.

“We see in quantum mechanics, the physics of the supertiny, that any time two particles bounce off each other or any time the nucleus of an atom can decay, that there's a kind of probability associated with it,” Shara said. “The interpretation many physicists give to this is that all possibilities happen. The one that we observe is in the universe we're in, but there are universes splitting off from ours and multiple possibilities of reality happening all the time.”

It’s been previously suggested that mini black holes produced by the Large Hadron Collider could provide the key to finding parallel universes. Finding mini black holes would provide support for string theory and related models, which all predict the existence of extra dimensions and parallel universes. — Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News
