Humanity came out of Africa, but some came back
Humans migrated out of Africa, but some groups migrated back, a recent study has shown.
According to the study, published in the journal Science, the "Eurasian backflow"—which reached all the way to Central, West, and South Africa—“came from a population closely related to Early Neolithic farmers, who had colonized Europe 4,000 years earlier.”
The return to Africa happened around 3,500 years ago, based on the analysis of the genome sequence of “Mota,” a man who lived 4,500 years ago in the Ethiopian highlands. And because so many Africans still carry the Neolithic DNA, scientists are speculating that it was a huge migration that made its way back to Africa.
An analysis of Mota’s genes also suggested that “he had brown eyes and dark skin, was lactose intolerant and was adapted for living at high altitude,” said New Scientist. — Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News
