National Scientist Benito Vergara, 81


Malacañan Palace on Tuesday afternoon announced the recent demise of National Scientist Benito Vergara, one of the foremost pioneers in modern rice research in the country and the world.
 
"He worked full time on rice research from 1961 to 1995, and was for some time the Director for Administration of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). His Farmer's Primer on Growing Rice has been translated into more than 40 languages," notes the Official Gazette.

He was inducted into the Order of National Scientists, one of the country's highest civilian honors, in 2001.
