A Filipino student managed to get a perfect score in the 2015 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) which was held simultaneously across 42 countries last August.

Andres Gonzales, a Grade 8 student from Colegio de San Juan de Letran was one of 42 students worldwide who got a perfect score during the competition. A total of 300,000 students participated, with 98 Filipino students nabbing prizes.

Gonzales was awarded the Peter O’Halloran Certificate during the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) of the Philippines’ 20th anniversary celebration at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel. Eleven other students were given Prize Awards and 83 students received Certificates of High Distinction.

Other AMC Medalists were Kyle Patrick Dulay of Philippine Science High School – Main Campus, Vince Jan Torres of Sta. Rosa Science and Technology High School, and Farrell Eldrian Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy.

“The MTG has been instrumental in training some of the best students and educators in mathematics. For this, the government and all Filipinos have a lot to thank them for,” said Department of Science - Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) Director Dr. Josette Biyo.

To the AMC winners, Biyo said, “Your gifts are certainly welcome additions to the growing population of professionals in the scientific community and SEI is very much willing to help you in this pursuit.” — Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News
