Pinoy kids shine in international math tilt
Young Filipino math wizards stood tall against their counterparts from around the world at the recently-concluded World Math Invitational (WMI).
The Philippine team bagged 10 gold, 19 silver, 9 bronze medals at the event, which was held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from July 14-18, 2017.
The contest attracted over a thousand students from the United States, China, Bulgaria, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Hongkong, Macau, Taiwan, the Philippines and Vietnam, according to a press release from the Asian Math Sci League.
Nine-year-old Grand Champion in the Grade 3 level Jerome Austin Te of Jubilee Christian Academy obtained a perfect score.
Lorenzo Franco Kasilag, a fourth-grade student of Diliman Preparatory School, earned a gold medal in the written portion of the olympiad, as well as a bronze medal and a cash prize of US$100 for his video entry in the Mini-Math Creative category.
Maria Monica Manlises, an eigth grader at St. Stephen’s High School, took home a silver medal for the written portion and a merit award and cash prize of $50 in the Research Project Regarding Math category.
