Pinoy students bag 37 medals in Math, English tilts in Malaysia

Filipino students bagged a total of 32 medals during the recent Math and English competitions held in Malaysia, academic groups announced on Tuesday.

Young Filipino students earned medals at the 13th Asian Finals of the World Math-Fusion Olympiad which was held from July 26 to 28, Mathematics Development Academy of the Philippines (MathDAP) said.

The Philippine team won four gold, six silver and eight bronze medals, as well as five excellence certificates.

According to the MathDAP, the Philippines dominated the contest as it was the only country that won gold and silver medals in the level 3 category covering Grades 7, 8 and 9.

“Alvann Walter Paredes Dy of St. Jude Catholic School and Krystal Lim Tiong Soon of Grace Christian College from the Philippine team emerged as the only gold medalists among all participants in level 3,” MathDAP said.

Meanwhile, at the 10th Global Finals of SPEAK International Competition, Philippine Board of Studies Foundation (PBOSF) said Filipino students bagged 19 medals — six gold, eight silver and five bronze.

Alfredo Orosco and Angeline Orosco, who accompanied the Philippine delegation, said the competition—with participants from the Philippines, China, Indonesia, and Malaysia—focuses on skills on  listening, reading and composition writing.
