Humanity won't survive without these three animals
Immersed in our own busy worlds, humans often have a hard time imagining that our whole planet can fall apart if certain animals go missing from our ecosystems.
Whether it's an insect or a flying mammal, these three animals actually keep the world going:
1. Bees
Albert Einstein once said that if bees disappeared, humanity only has four years before we too will fall apart.
The Earth Watch Institute also said that bees are the most important living things on the planet.
According to an AHA! episode on Sunday, bees actually help create 70% of what we eat. They're not only considered the greatest pollinators but they're also the only insects that can produce food for us.
Ronniel Pedales, an entomologist from the Biodiversity Research Laboratory in the University of the Philippines Diliman, said that bees have a specialized structure in their body that allows them to carry more pollen with them than other insects.
Bees gather nectar from two million flowers just to make one pound of honey. Not only do they produce food, but they're also the only living beings that don't carry of any pathogen like fungus, virus or bacteria.
2. Primates
Biologist Simeon Bejar from the Biodiversity Research Laboratory in the U.P. Diliman said in the episode that primates are one of the most important animals in the ecosystem because of their capability to disperse seeds.
He said, "Kakainin nila 'yung fruit tapos magta-travel sila. Doon nila iiwanan 'yung buto. Pwede din nila idumi 'yung buto tapos mga buto tutubo."
3. Bats
According to the AHA! epsiode, bats are the biggest consumers of insects in the planet. They can even eat 1,000 dengue-carrying mosquitoes in just one hour.
Aside from consuming bugs and pests that harm plants, bats are also the only mammals that can fly and help in dispersing seeds, called bat-dropping.
It's a process where seeds are dropped in different parts of the world.
Biologist Mariano Roy Duya from the Biodiversity Research Laboratory in U.P Diliman said, "Lumilipad sila sa ibang lugar para doon kainin. 'Pag ganoon naidi-disperse nila ang buto." — Kaela Malig/LA, GMA News
