Once-in-800-years 'Christmas star' to shine starting Dec. 21, 2020

A bright "Christmas star" will light up the nighttime sky starting on December 21 when the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn align.

According to GMA’s resident meteorologist Nathaniel Cruz, the rare phenomenon only occurs every 800 years.

The alignment of the two planets make it seem that they are just one heavenly but with their combined combined brightness.

The Bible tells of the story of how the Three Wise Men followed a dazzling star to Bethlehem where they honored the newborn Jesus.

Observers hoping to catch the alignment of the two planets in the sky can do so after the sunset on December 21.

Experts say binoculars or telescopes may help to see the phenomenon. -Ma. Angelica Garcia/NB, GMA News
