Magnitude 6.2 earthquake hits Sarangani, Davao Occidental


A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Wednesday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The quake occurred at 7:21 a.m.

The epicenter was located at 4.63°N, 125.44°E - 086 km S 01° E of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 16 km.

Intensity V was felt in General Santos City, South Cotabato.

Intensity IV was felt in Kiamba, Alabel, Maasim, Glan, Malungon and Malapatan in Sarangani, as well as in Lebak in Sultan Kudarat, Datu Blah Sinsuat in Maguindanao, and Koronadal City,  Polomolok, Tampakan and Tupi in South Cotabato.

Intensity III was felt in Maitum, Sarangani; Cotabato City, Maguindanao; Davao City; Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; Tantangan and Santo Nino, South Cotabato.

Intensity II was felt in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat; Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat; and Magpet, North Cotabato.

Intensity I meanwhile was felt in Zamboanga City.

Damage and aftershocks are to be expected, according to PHIVOLCS.

PHIVOLCS earlier reported the quake's magnitude to be 6.1. 

Meanwhile, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the General Santos City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office suspended work in all government facilities until 1 p.m. to conduct inspection of possible damaged facilities. — with Anna Felicia Bajo/KG/RSJ, GMA News
