Alert level lifted, Mayon Volcano now at 'normal state' —PHIVOLCS

PHIVOLCS on Friday lifted the alert level over Mayon Volcano due to the decline in activities based on parameters, among them volcanic earthquake, ground deformation, gas emission, and visual observation of the summit.

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the alert status over Mayon was lowered from Alert Level 1 to Alert Level 0, which means the volcano is at a normal state.

“Since the lowering of alert status of Mayon Volcano from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 1 last 17 July 2020, there has been a continued decline in all monitoring parameters of Mayon Volcano,” it said.

“PHIVOLCS-DOST is now lowering the alert status of Mayon from Alert Level 1 to Alert Level 0,” it added.

According to PHIVOLCS, the parameters have returned to baseline levels and no magmatic eruption is foreseen in the immediate future.

However, PHIVOLCS reminded that the alert status may be raised again to 1 if it observes a new increase in any one or combination of these parameters.

Despite this, the public is still reminded to avoid entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone "due to perennial hazards of rockfalls, avalanches, ash puffs and sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruption at the summit area which may occur without warning."

"Furthermore, people living in valleys and active river channels are cautioned to remain vigilant against sediment-laden streamflows and lahars in the event of prolonged and heavy rainfall brought about by the advent of the rainy season," PHIVOLCS added. --Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
