Taal Volcano's sulfur dioxide emission down to 9K tonnes

The sulfur dioxide emitted by Taal Volcano went down to 9,154 tonnes on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Sunday.

This was a significant decrease from the 23,576 tonnes of sulfur emitted on Friday, considered by PHIVOLCS as "anomalously high."

PHIVOLCS also recorded six volcanic tremor events lasting two to five minutes, and low-level background tremor in the past 24 hours.

The agency said vog also resulted from the upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in Taal Lake.

Plumes went up to as high as 2,000 meters from the main crater before drifting west-northwest.

PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 2 remains in effect as the volcano is still showing increased unrest.

It recommended that Taal Volcano Island, a permanent danger zone, especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures be kept off limits.

PHIVOLCS also said occupancy and boating on Taal Lake should be prohibited.

It also advised pilots not to fly near the volcano as doing so may be hazardous to aircraft. —KG, GMA News
