Bonifacio War Tunnel now mapped using 3D scanning

The Bonifacio War Tunnel has now been mapped thanks to 3D scanning.

The "as-built survey" of the historic tunnel was done by Digiscript, a digital capture service firm.

The tunnel is located below the former Fort McKinley, which was renamed to Fort Bonifacio. Part of it is now known as Bonifacio Global City, a central business district.

Built in 1936 under American rule, the Bonifacio War Tunnel was designed to serve as a supply line of the military. It was widened to become a bomb shelter during the Japanese occupation.

The mapping of the tunnel was conducted as part of an engineering study to determine if the structure can be converted to a war museum.

Using 3D laser scanning, Digiscript completed a detailed image of the tunnel including the depth of its parts, the passageways, and the area of the rooms inside.

The company said the 3D scan can help engineers to know which parts are safe for people to visit and how the rooms can be used.

The map can also help guide the actual construction because it can point out the structures above the tunnel.
