Magnitude 5.3 earthquake hits Leyte


A magnitude 5.3 earthquake rocked Burauen, Leyte past midnight on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The earthquake, tectonic in origin, occurred at 12:39 a.m.

Its epicenter was located at 10.93°N, 124.81°E - 010 km S 58° W of the municipality of Burauen.

The quake had a depth of four kilometers.

Intensity V was felt in Burauen, Ormoc City, Kananga, La Paz, Julita, and Pastrana in Leyte.

Intensity IV was felt in Dulag, Santa Fe, Barugo, Abuyog, Palo, Tolosa, Capoocan and Baybay City in Leyte; and in Tacloban City.

Intensity III on the other hand was felt in Cebu City and Talisay City in Cebu; Lawaan, Eastern Samar; Leyte, Leyte; and Biliran, Biliran

Intensity II meanwhile was felt in Borongan City and Taft in Eastern Samar; and Naval, Biliran.

PHIVOLCS said no damage is expected but aftershocks may occur. —KG, GMA News
