69 volcanic quakes recorded in Bulusan Volcano; Alert Level 1 still in effect

Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon had 69 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Tuesday.

Of this number, 56 were volcanic tremors lasting 19 minutes, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin.

The volcano also emitted 4,627 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Sunday.

PHIVOLCS noted voluminous emission of plumes reaching up to 750 meters tall before these drifted west northwest.

The volcano edifice is still inflated, it said.

PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) remains in effect. It also said sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions are possible.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is prohibited. Likewise, entry without vigilance into the two-kilometer extended danger zone (EDZ) is not allowed.

PHIVOLCS also advised against flying aircraft close to Bulusan Volcano.

On Sunday, Bulusan Volcano had another phreatic eruption before dawn, lasting for 18 minutes. It was the second phreatic eruption this month, following the one that occurred on June 5. —KBK, GMA News
