PHIVOLCS eyes more volcano observatories, seismic stations, intensity meters by 2028
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Thursday said it is planning to have additional facilities and equipment by 2028.
At a public briefing, PHIVOLCS officer-in-charge Teresito Bacolcol said the agency is creating a plan to acquire more volcano observatories, seismic stations, and intensity meters.
“We currently have 116 remote seismic stations and we plan to add more. There will be 140 seismic stations by 2028…Currently, we have 133 intensity meters and our objective is to have 360 intensity meters by 2028. For the volcanos naman, currently, we have seven observatories but by 2028, we will add two more,” he said.
He added that more seismic stations will be established around volcanoes.
According to him, the PHIVOLCS will also update the mapping of geohazards in the country on its HazardHunterPH application.
Bacolcol said the PHIVOLCS are now crafting a plan that is aligned with the Philippine development plan of President Ferdinand “Bongbong Marcos” Jr.
“We are currently formulating a plan that is realistic and achievable, and this should be aligned with the Philippine development plan of President Marcos,” he said. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
