PHIVOLCS: Taal Volcano had 4 volcanic earthquakes in past 24 hours

Four volcanic earthquakes including one ongoing volcanic tremor had been recorded in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Monday.

In its latest bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the ongoing tremor has started Sunday at 12:10 a.m.

A moderate emission of plumes was also observed in the volcano reaching up to 900 meters and drifting in the northwest direction.

The volcano emitted 5,887 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on July 12, PHIVOLCS said, adding an upwelling of hot volcanic fluids was observed in the Main Crater Lake.

An inflation on the northern flank of Taal Volcano Island was also noticed, according to PHIVOLCS.

Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1 due to low-level unrest.

Entry to Taal Volcano Island (Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ) remains prohibited, especially the main crater and Daang Kastila fissures, as well as occupancy and boating on Taal Lake.

Flying any aircraft close to the volcano is also not allowed.

PHIVOLCS warned of possible hazards such as steam-driven, phreatic, or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
