Taal Volcano had 8 volcanic earthquakes lasting up to almost 6 hours —PHIVOLCS

Eight volcanic earthquakes, including five volcanic tremors, had been recorded in Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported on Tuesday.

In its latest bulletin, PHIVOLCS said these volcanic earthquakes had a duration of five hours and 57 minutes.

The moderate emission of plumes from the volcano also grew to 1,500 from 900 meters on Monday, according to PHIVOLCS.

Taal Volcano emitted 5,887 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on July 12, PHIVOLCS said, adding that an upwelling of hot volcanic fluids was observed in the Main Crater Lake.

An inflation on the northern flank of Taal Volcano Island was also noticed.

Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1 due to low-level unrest.

Entry to Taal Volcano Island (Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ) remains prohibited, especially to the main crater and Daang Kastila fissures, as well as occupancy and boating on Taal Lake.

Flying any aircraft close to the volcano is also not allowed.

PHIVOLCS warned of possible hazards such as steam-driven, phreatic, or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas. —Joviland Rita/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
