PHIVOLCS reports increased volcanic quakes in Kanlaon


PHIVOLCS reported an increase in volcanic activity in Mt. Kanlaon in the last 24 hours. 

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology  (PHIVOLCS) on Thursday reported an increase in volcanic activity on Mt. Kanlaon in the last 24 hours. 

A total of 67 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in Kanlaon in the past 24 hours compared to 42 from the previous day, according to PHIVOLCS' observation summary.

A moderate emission of 400-meter-tall plumes was also noted by PHIVOLCS.

Meanwhile, volcanic Sulfur Dioxide emissions decreased, averaging 3,779 tonnes per day from 5,083 tonnes on Tuesday.

Kanlaon Volcano is still under Alert Level 2.

Residents are advised to avoid entry into the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and to prepare for possible hazards such as steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, ash fall scenarios or lahar flows. --Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
