4 earthquakes hit Mindanao on Easter Sunday 2025


Magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat

Four earthquakes measuring above magnitude 5 occurred in Mindanao on Easter Sunday, according to data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Three of those occurred in Sultan Kudarat, while the other one was recorded in Davao Occidental.

The first one, with magnitude 5.9, occurred at 12:11 a.m. in the waters of Sultan Kudarat.

Its epicenter was located at 05.77°N, 124.06°E or 51 km S 17° W of the municipality of Palimbang.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 6 km.

It was felt at:

  • Intensity V in Kiamba, Sarangani; Lebak, Sultan Kudarat;
  • Intensity IV in Alabel, Glan, and Maitum in Sarangani; T'Boli, and Tupi in South Cotabato;
  • Intensity III in Maasim, Malapatan, and Malungon in Sarangani; Banga, City of Koronadal, Lake Sebu, Norala, Polomolok, Santo Niño, Surallah, Tampakan, and Tantangan in South Cotabato; General Santos City; Bagumbayan, Esperanza, Isulan, Senator Ninoy Aquino, and City of Tacurong in Sultan Kudarat;
  • Intensity II in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur; Davao City; M'lang in Cotabato; Columbio and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat; and
  • Intensity I in Zamboanga City; Hagonoy, Malalag, and Padada in Davao del Sur.

 

PHIVOLCS said damage and aftershocks are to be expected.

Magnitude 5.1 quake at 12:50 a.m.

At 12:50 a.m., a magnitude 5.1 earthquake also occurred in the waters of Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

It had its epicenter at 05.81°N, 124.10°E - 046 km S 13° W of Palimbang.

 

 

 

The earthquake had a depth of 1 km and was tectonic in origin.

Intensity III was felt in Maitum, Sarangani, and in Tupi, South Cotabato.

Intensity II was recorded in Maasim, Sarangani; Banga, Norala, and Tampakan in South Cotabato; and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity I meanwhile was logged in Polomolok, South Cotabato.

No aftershocks and damage were to be expected, PHIVOLCS said.

Magnitude 5.4 quake at 1:37 a.m.

At 1:37 a.m. meanwhile, a magnitude 5.4 tectonic earthquake occurred again in Palimbang.

The epicenter was traced to 05.86°N, 124.09°E - 040 km S 16° W of Palimbang.

The quake was tectonic and had a depth of focus of 1 km.

PHIVOLCS said the quake was felt at:

  • Intensity V - Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat;
  • Intensity IV - Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat;
  • Intensity III - Bagumbayan, Esperanza, and Lebak, Sultan Kudarat;
  • Intensity II - Isulan, Sultan Kudarat; and
  • Intensity I - Tampakan, South Cotabato; and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat.

 

Damage is expected but no aftershocks were foreseen, PHIVOLCS said.

Davao Occidental

Meanwhile, in the waters of Davao Occidental, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred at 7:06 a.m.

The epicenter was at 02.67°N, 128.79°E - 482 km S 51° E of Balut Island, a municipality of Sarangani, according to PHIVOLCS.

 

 

 

The earthquake was also tectonic, and had a depth of 452 km.

No damage and aftershocks were expected, PHIVOLCS said. —KG, GMA Integrated News
