Apple releases massive OSX security updates
Apple Inc. released this week massive updates for the latest versions of its OS X operating systems, OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and OS X 10.7 (Lion).
Computer security firm Sophos said the Snow Leopard update weighs in at 200 MB while the Lion update weighs between 700 MB and 1.4 GB.
"This sounds like the sort of update you would ignore at your peril. It includes 39 fixes, addressing 52 different Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) issues (plus one problem - various dodgy SSL certificates - not covered by a CVE identifier)," it said.
Sophos said 19 of the fixes are for problems listed with an impact of arbitrary code execution - which a cybercriminal can use for a drive-by infection.
It noted cybercrooks "adore" remote code execution vulnerabilities as they can sneak program code onto a computer under perfectly innocent-looking data files.
"The crooks are willing to pay good money for data-borne exploits; you need to be willing to patch the underlying vulnerabilities as soon as you can," it advised owners of Apple machines running OS X. — TJD, GMA News
