Google fetes 2012 Olympics

Search giant Google on Friday joined the world in heralding the opening of the 2012 Olympics with one of its patented doodles.

Visitors to Google's homepage (www.google.com) were greeted with a doodle of young athletes taking part in various games in the London Games.

The disciplines on doodle included football, swimming, running/jumping, javelin throw, fencing and basketball.

Letters that spell out the word "Google" are used in the sports where the athletes in the doodle excel.

As in the past, clicking on the doodle will take the visitor to a Search Results page for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The 2012 Games are to start on July 27 when the opening ceremony is held, and end on August 12.

In the Philippines, the Games will officially start at 5 a.m. Saturday, however.

A separate article on IGN Live said over 10,500 athletes from 204 countries are to participate in 302 events in 26 sports.

It added London becomes the first city to host the modern Olympic Games thrice, after having hosted the event in 1908 and 1948. — TJD, GMA News
