REVIEW: Marvel Vs Capcom: Origins

The Marvel Vs Capcom series has always been a staple in the fighting game genre. Featuring iconic figures from the House of Ideas battling it out against characters featured in classic Capcom franchises such as Street Fighter and Megaman, the crossover brawler series has lingered on to be a dominant force that continues to attract a lot of gamers into the fold, recently turning things up in the new decade by releasing a 3rd installment and upgrade in the forms of Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3. Despite the jump to the next generation plane, many still prefer playing the classics installment to this day. To that end, Capcom capitalizes on the opportunity to satiate nostalgic gamers needs by releasing a retro-flavored package of love in the form of Marvel Vs Capcom: Origins.

Composed of two proven Capcom classics —namely, Marvel Super Heroes and Marvel Vs Capcom: Clash of the Super Heroes, MvC: Origins is truly a gem to behold for those itching to play classic six button single and tag team brawling action. Not simply restricted to being a port of two legendary fighting games, this rerelease for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 packs a couple of extras and incentives that will get a fans itching to get this downloable game for their respective consoles. The game adds GGPO-enhanced online play that’s similar to Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, with features such as spectator mode and player lobbies applied for network play. Trophies, achievements, and challengers are also added to give some incentive and replay value for even the most grueling players to overcome and conquer. What’s more the game has HD graphical enhancements and replay saves, as well as various screen toggles that allow for interesting view changes such as an “over the shoulder” arcade cabinet look.

Gameplay wise, MvC: Origins is a perfect port of the two aforementioned fighters included in the package. It’s a shame that the rest of the classic X-Men Marvel Vs Capcom games, namely X-Men: Children of the Atom, X-Men Vs Street Fighter, and Marvel Super Heroes Vs Street Fighter, didn’t make the cut to what is already smashpacked collection, but I suppose net code tweaks and licensing issues can only do so much. Still, you get more than your money’s worth with these two classic installments, and for the sum total of $14.99 on PSN and 1200 Microsoft Points, it’s not a bad deal at all. If you’re itching to play Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ryu, Strider Hiryu, and all the rest in retro 2D flavored goodness, Marvel Vs Capcom: Origins is truly a match made in heaven for you. — TJD, GMA News
