Angry Birds Star Wars blasts into Facebook

Facebook users, may the birds be with you: Angry Birds Star Wars has blasted its way into the social networking site.

Rovio Entertainment on Monday released "Angry Birds Star Wars" on Facebook, with new power-ups, tournaments, and full social integration.

“It’s all the fun of Angry Birds Star Wars taken to the next level. You get the great Angry Birds Star Wars gameplay for free, plus you can compete against your friends to see who is the ultimate bird-flinger and Jedi Master,” Petri Järvilehto, EVP of Games at Rovio, said in a news release posted on gaming site Gamasutra.

The latest saga of the monster hit video game is a collaboration between Rovio Entertainment and Lucasfilm, maker of the "Star Wars" films.

Rovio said the Facebook flavor of Angry Birds Star Wars combines the lovable game characters and new social features.

Julien Codorniou, head of Facebook's EMEA Game Partnerships, said Angry Birds Star Wars on Facebook is "another great example of a top mobile developer building social games for Facebook.com."

"Rovio's games connect people with their friends around the world through high quality gameplay, immersive graphics and engaging social elements, and we’re excited to see them bring their latest game to Facebook," Codorniou said.

Social features

The latest flavor of the Angry Birds game includes social features such as:

  • New weekly tournaments, with five new levels every week to challenge players' Jedi skills.
  • New Power-ups and Abilities, such as Blaster Droid, Saber Sling, and Thermal Detonator.

"Plus, fans can now use the all new Clone Bird ability to create a duplicate bird of their choice —perfect for tricky situations where you need some extra backup," Rovio said.

The game also allows players to cooperate and compete with friends, send in-game gifts, battle it out on the leaderboards, or brag about scores on friends’ timelines.

A separate article on PC Magazine said Rovio released the mobile version of Angry Birds Star Wars last month, and it reached the top of the U.S. iPhone charts within 2.5 hours of release.

The latest game takes players through an intergalactic journey across the deserts of Tatooine all the way to the depths of the Pig Star.

"Along the way, you use the Force, and wield a Lightsaber in a quest to blast away the Pigtroopers and take down the evil Darth Vader, 'Dark Lord of the Pigs,'" it said. — TJD, GMA News
