'Little Red Riding Hood' retold in doodle tribute to the Brothers Grimm
Search giant Google on Thursday paid tribute to the Brothers Grimm - German authors who popularized many European tales - with an interactive doodle.
Visitors to Google's homepage (www.google.com) were greeted with a doodle that told the story of Little Red Riding Hood, one of their best-known tales.
They have to click on the button to progress through the story before reaching the end, where another click will bring them to a Search Results page for the Brothers Grimm.
The Brothers Grimm include Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859).
Both were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, and authors who collected folklore.
With their work, the tales of "Cinderella" (Aschenputtel), "The Frog Prince" (Der Froschkönig), "Hansel and Gretel" (Hänsel und Gretel), "Rapunzel", "Rumpelstiltskin" (Rumpelstilzchen), and "Snow White" (Schneewittchen) are now well-known.
An article on NDTV.com said Grimm's Fairy Tales is the popular name of a 19th century German book called Children's and Household Tales (Kinder und Hausmärchen in German).
"The first volume of the first edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales was published in 1812 containing 86 stories; the second volume of 70 stories followed in 1814. The seventh and final edition under the brothers' watch was published in 1857 and it contained 211 stories split across two volumes," it said. It added these editions were extensively illustrated by Philipp Grot Johann.
"Some of these illustrations are mildly humorous, such as the one in The Devil With the Three Golden Hairs where the devil is pictured reading a newspaper which, on closer examination, is a stock market letter. Robert Leinweber took over illustration duties for the latter editions after Johann's death in 1892," NDTV said. — ELR, GMA News
