Tech writer builds AR-enhanced Tardis model

While it may not be possible to physically recreate the TARDIS from the TV show "Doctor Who" at least for now, why not make a virtual one?

A tech writer managed to make a model TARDIS whose interior is enhanced by augmented reality (AR), Wired.com reported.

TARDIS is a time machine and spacecraft in the "Doctor Who" series. TARDIS stands for "Time and Relative Dimension in Space."

Greg Kumparak, who made the model TARDIS, had left his job running TechCrunch’s mobile coverage so he could start learning to make things.

“I’ve always kind of known how to build things. I never felt, however, that I could just could just sit down and conjure up something out of nothing. That bothered me,” he said (http://www.wired.com/design/2012/12/augmented-reality-tardis/).

“The TARDIS was just built because I thought it’d be cool and wanted it to exist,” he added.

Kumparak said he first wanted to make a TARDIS model because he had watched "Doctor Who" and thought it would be fun.

After completing it, he decided to enhance the iconic police box with a working light. Then he hit on the idea of using AR to depict the interior.

It took him five days spread over a month or so to do the project, which involved light woodworking and simple circuitry and 3-D modeling.

He also learned to use the Unity game engine and the Vuforia SDK.

Kumparak said he had been studying "a pretty wide variety of things in the past few months, which has led to an equally wide variety of side projects being taken on.” -- KDM, GMA News
