Oracle: Major patches for Java out on Feb 19

After being criticized for its slow response to vulnerabilities in its Java software, Oracle has scheduled a Patch Tuesday on Feb. 19 where it will roll out the much-needed updates.

Security vendor Sophos said that while Oracle rolled out some patches last Feb. 1 and managed to block many attacks, some patches may have been left out.

"So Oracle has now announced that there will be a Patch Tuesday after all, to top up Patch Friday to full strength. Don't miss out on 19 February 2013!" it said.

It said Oracle describes the forthcoming update as cumulative, which means it will include patches from the previous update.

According to Sophos, Oracle had been the target of complaints for its slow patching regimen, especially for Java.

Java usually gets only three main updates a year, compared to quarterly fixes for other Oracle products, it added.

"Now that Oracle seems to be finding some velocity and the willingness to 'patch early, patch often,' take 'em up on the offer!" it said. — TJD, GMA News
