Microsoft warns against 'Free XBox Points' scam

Microsoft this week warned the public against a new scam promising "free xbox points" for wishing the software giant a happy birthday.

In a post on its Facebook account, Microsoft advised the public, especially gamers, not to respond to such Xbox points offers.

"There appears to be a scam going around that promises free Xbox points for wishing Microsoft a happy birthday today. Please do not respond to it. While our 38th anniversary is this week, there won’t be free Xbox points for the occasion, but we hope you'll celebrate with us nonetheless!" it said.

Microsoft Corp. was founded by William Henry "Bill" Gates III and Paul Allen on April 4, 1975.

A separate report on Neowin.net said the Internet scam promised people "free Xbox points" as part of Microsoft's anniversary celebration.

Neowin.net also noted the points that one can buy to download Xbox Live Arcade games and content are "Microsoft Points" and not "Xbox Points."

"However, there is a legitimate way to gain free Microsoft points from the company via its Bing Rewards program simply by searching on Bing and accomplishing goals every day to earn Microsoft points along with other rewards," it said.

Meanwhile, tech site Mashable said this was not the first time such a scam has spread online.

In 2012, it said a member of the online forum for video-game developer Bungie commented on similar rumors where if one wishes Microsoft a happy birthday, "you get 6000 Microsoft points." — TJD, GMA News
