Skullgirls' 3rd DLC character is a bleeding hot Egyptian goddess
By Michael Logarta
Skullgirls, the all-girl 2D fighting game developed by Lab Zero, is getting a new DLC character in the form of the sexy-creepy Eliza —an Egyptian-themed, bloodletting brawler— according to Arcade Sushi and Eurogamer.
Eliza, a celebrity diva whose attire sports an ancient Egyptian motif, was blackmailed by the mafia into becoming one of their enforcers. Just like many of the other characters in the Skullgirls roster, Eliza plays host to a parasite that endows her with uncanny powers. This includes the ability to control her blood to devastating, albeit messy effect.
Every time Eliza is hit, her blood spills onto the ground and stays there, a la Mortal Kombat. She can then use this blood to attack her opponents. Developer Lab Zero has described her as the “ultimate attack-from-disadvantage” character with two fighting modes: one in which her skeletal parasite, Sekhmet, stays inside her body, giving her powerful attacks at the expense of mobility; and another that has her utilizing her Staff of Ra, allowing her to move faster and to choose from a different array of skills. 3 of 5
Eliza will be the third of five planned DLC characters for the game. Backers of their Indiegogo campaign were given the opportunity to choose from a large cast of possible new characters to be developed for Skullgirls. Eliza won the most votes, beating fellow finalists Minette, the cutest fish-girl waitress ever to grace a fighting game and an early fan favorite; Annie, a children’s television show host with a murderous-looking stuffed bunny; and Aeon, a reclusive goddess of time and one of the three main behind-the-scenes antagonists in the story.
Accolades
In a world replete with cookie-cutter 3D fighting games, Skullgirls has been praised for its fantastic 2D visuals, particularly its gorgeous animation and an art style that merges the best of anime with western aesthetics. The gameplay has been lauded as one of the best as well, winning Best Fighting Game Awards from VGchartz, Bitbag, and Ripten at the 2011 E3 conference. The downloadable game’s popularity explains the success of its Indiegogo campaign, which raised around $830,000 of its original $150,000 target. — TJD, GMA News
