Original 'Sonic the Hedgehog' game now on Android

Fans of "Sonic the Hedgehog" who now own a smartphone or tablet running Google's Android can now relive the thrill of the original 1991 game.

Sega of America ported the classic game to Android May 17, and has made it available on Google Play for P123.22.

"The Sonic game which started it all is now optimized for mobile devices! Race at lightning speeds across seven classic zones as Sonic the Hedgehog. Run and spin through loop-de-loops as you collect rings and defeat enemies on your mission to save the world from the evil Dr. Eggman," it said in its description of the app.

Sega said the app is a re-mastered mobile version of the SEGA Genesis classic, but also adds new playable characters.

Players can assume the roles of Sonic’s friends Tails & Knuckles - who can fly, climb, and glide around levels.

Another bonus is that the game now plays in widescreen at a smooth 60 frames per second, "offering unrivalled performance."

Even the game’s soundtrack has been fully re-mastered.

The app is a 31MB download.

A separate article on tech site Mashable said the Sonic port was earlier released for iOS. — TJD, GMA News
