Microsoft dismisses claim of hack attack on Xbox Live
Microsoft has dismissed a claim by a so-called hacker that he had broken into the software's Xbox Live gaming service and stole the account credentials of some 47 million users.
A report on PC World said the hacker identified as @Reckz0r claimed Microsoft stored the login credentials, including email addresses and passwords, in plain text.
"Xbox Live has not been hacked. Microsoft can confirm that there has been no breach to the security of our Xbox Live service," it quoted Microsoft as saying.
In his Pastebin note, the hacker posted a link to a 6GB file supposedly containing the hacked data.
The PC World report noted the claimed breach came shortly after Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One, its gaming console.
But PC World also noted @Reckz0r also has a dubious track record involving posting old data.
It cited an incident last year when the hacker posted a link on Pastebin to a data dump. He claimed he had "penetrated over 79 large banks" and obtained 50GB of data on MasterCard and Visa cardholders.
However, it cited a payment card industry source at the time who said the data appeared to be old. — ELR, GMA News
