Microsoft producing Windows 8 smartwatch

If Apple has its iWatch and Samsung its Gear, Microsoft may be coming up with its version of wearable computing: a wristwatch version of its Windows 8-powered Surface device.

Tech site AmongTech said cited trusted sources who said the watch will have removable wrist bands available in colors such as blue, red, yellow, gray, white and black.

"(A)nd the outside housing will be made Oxynitride Aluminium, a aluminium that is a 80 percent transparent material but still four times harder than glass," it said.

Microsoft's smart watch has since gotten its own department and is no longer part of the Xbox team, AmongTech added.

On the other hand, AmongTech said its source confirmed the watch will have a customized version of Windows 8 and will use cloud-based storage.

But unlike Google's Glass, Microsoft's device need not be connected to a smartphone, and will have its own 4G LTE and 6GB of internal storage mostly for the OS.

"The product is currently still in prototype but we expect to see more about it being revealed in late 2014," it said. — TJD, GMA News
