Upcoming Angry Birds Star Wars II game adds interactive toys to the mix

Players of the popular "Angry Birds" game who have grown tired of playing the same characters and battling the bad piggies may want to wait for the next installment of the game this September.

Rovio Entertainment said "Angry Birds Star Wars II," which lands on app stores on Sept. 19, will introduce at least 30 characters that can be unlocked with toys, and the ability to choose sides.

"To compliment this wide lineup of characters, there will also be a line of over 30 collectable TELEPODS figures from Hasbro. Placing these figures onto your phone or tablet camera will scan your character of choice directly into the game, allowing you to select new characters on the fly," it said.

A video was posted on the blog explaining how the Telepods toys can unlock characters in the game:

Rovio said the upcoming game will "tackle the prequels, introducing a wide roster of never-before-seen Angry Birds Star Wars characters," over 30 of them.

But as to whether the much-hated character Jar Jar Binks will also be in the game, Rovio said: "we will not comment."

Meanwhile, Rovio said another first for the upcoming game is that players can choose to side with the birds or with the pigs.

"Players can choose to 'Join the Pork Side,' and rumor has it that the emperor is recruiting (more on this soon!!)," it said.

Telepods

A separate article on Mashable said the Telepod figures are about an inch high and depict Angry Birds versions of popular Star Wars characters.

"There are characters fans already know from the previous game, as well as new additions from the Star Wars prequels — like Jar Jar Binks, General Grievous and Darth Maul. There are 30 figures in all," it said.

But the interesting part is that each figure has a code on its base that can be scanned by a device's front-facing camera.

Mashable said the toys may be scanned by devices running Apple's iOS, Google's Android, Microsoft's Windows 8 and even Blackberry.

"At any point, players can decide to import one of their action figures in place of the character sitting on the slingshot at the start of the level," Mashable said.

It added the new "Pork Side" mode will allow players to toss the Empire pigs from the slingshot. — TJD, GMA News
